Ocean City's Famous Boardwalk

Ocean City Boardwalk

Be sure to visit Ocean City’s world-famous Boardwalk during your stay at our beach. The sights, scents and sounds delight all ages. Ocean City is proud to be honored by the Travel Channel for having one of the “Best American Boardwalks” and last year was named one of the top 10 great Boardwalks in the country in USA Today. The Travel Channel noted: “Ocean City is the picture-perfect boardwalk. From the tiny train that chugs along the three-mile promenade to the antique carousel that dates back to 1902, Ocean City has kept its sense of a bygone era while keeping its attractions fresh.”

Visitors will discover the Boardwalk’s turn-of-the-century charm with the traditional wood walkway. An early morning bicycle ride along the Boardwalk is a great way to start every day in Ocean City. Numerous bicycle rental shops are conveniently located to get you on your way.

The southern portion of the Boardwalk now offers wider space for pedestrians along with a tram lane separated from the pedestrian traffic to enhance safety. Boardwalk trams, offering wheel-chair access, travel around and across the pier, bringing passengers even closer to the ocean for an enjoyable sightseeing trip.

From its early days the Boardwalk has always been a star attraction in the resort. Starting as boards laid in the sand and picked up each evening, it was later built as a permanent structure and now stretches three miles along the coast.

The Boardwalk has always been the place to see and be seen in Ocean City. A century ago, the evening ritual was to stroll the “boards” in your best attire after an elaborate dinner in your hotel. The look today may be more casual, but a walk down the Boardwalk is still a “must do” event.

Enjoy browsing through the Boardwalk shops for that perfect souvenir. Bring your appetites along with you. Boardwalk eateries serve a delicious assortment of treats. Eastern Shore seafood including crab cakes, Maryland fried chicken, pit beef barbecue, sizzling cheeseburgers, freshly baked pizzas and famous french fries are just a few of the menu offerings available along the Boardwalk. Satisfy that sweet tooth with saltwater taffy, caramel popcorn, ice cream, funnel cakes, cotton candy, chocolate-covered strawberries and creamy fudge.

Children of all ages enjoy the Boardwalk’s amusements and arcades. From the antique carousel to a thrilling roller coaster ride, the amusements beckon all. Get a birds-eye view of the barrier island from atop the ferris wheel and test your skills at the many games found along the southern end of the Boardwalk and pier. A visit to the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum at the very southern end of the Boardwalk is a great way to learn about the history of the town. Then take a seat on a bench overlooking the inlet and watch the boats come and go.

Visitors entering Ocean City via the Route 50 bridge will see the beautiful Boardwalk archway on North Division Street, which serves as a welcome sign as they cross over the bay onto this special island.
